Rain or shine, today's child car seat exchange at Vintage Faire mall
in Modesto will be held as scheduled, event sponsors said Thursday. If
it rains, the Stanislaus County Keep Baby Safe car seat exchange, safety
classes and other activities celebrating National Child Passenger Safety
Awareness Week will be moved inside the mall.
The programs are part of the "Buckle Up Your Valentine, Buckle Up
Your Love" event.
Modesto police officer Kim Castro said temporary awnings will be set
up in the parking lot for people to park under, out of the rain, while
police and California Highway Patrol officers and representatives of Keep
Baby Safe conduct free, drive-through inspections of car seats and seat
belts.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sponsors include the county Health
Services Agency, Keep Baby Safe, Modesto police, state Office of Traffic
Safety, Citizens for Safe Driving Committee and Hamaway's Baby News.
To be eligible to receive a new car seat, parents or guardians must exchange
a used car seat that is more than 7 years old. Also, they must bring their
child so he or she can be properly fitted to the new seat. Finally, parents
or guardians must attend a one-hour car seat safety class.
