A Turlock physical therapist is among dozens of professional presenters involved in this year’s Stanislaus County Wellness & Safety Fair being held next week in Modesto.

Dwight Peace, owner of Dwight Peace & Associates and Injury Prevention Group, will teach several sessions in ergonomics over the course of the three-day event, sponsored by the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors.

The sixth annual event will be held through Thursday at the Modesto Centre Plaza.

Ergonomics, or the study of how people work, will be one of 38 different classes and 106 sessions that will be taught to the estimated 4,000 employers and workers expected to attend the event. Classes range from Fork Lift Safety Training to Verbal Judo.

Among this year’s instructors will be representatives from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department Wisconsin-based Crisis Prevention Institute, the American Red Cross, In-Shape Health Clubs and the County Health Services Agency.

“We’re targeting all local businesses; really any scope of business from office staff to outdoor workers,” said Julie Cascia, Stanislaus County Wellness & Safety Fair coordinator.

Proper posture, repositioning computers and other office equipment and avoiding glare from workplace lighting will be discussed during Peace’s “Ergonomics for a Healthy Life” session. In the two-hour course, Peace will also discuss how ergonomic techniques can be applied to everyday situations.

“It teaches the basic concepts of injury prevention, health and exercise,” he said.

Peace regularly provides on-site training for local businesses, including offices, industries and factories. Evaluating the workplace to monitor things like the heights of assembly lines, Peace is better able to advise employers on how to prevent workplace injuries. The entire evaluation may require from several hours to a few months to complete.

Registration for next week’s event is $35 per day and includes buffet lunch, conference materials and admission to the exhibit hall. Online registration continues through today, or can be completed and paid for on-site.
