  Bravo, McDonalds

The recent decision by McDonald's to change the oil in which they cook french fries is to be applauded. They are aiming to reduce trans-fatty acids and saturated fat while increasing polyunsaturated fat. Nevertheless, people need to remember that this does not mean that they can now eat more fries. There are just as many calories in the fries with the new formula.

Moderation is the key to a healthy diet. The increase in childhood obesity as well as the high rate of cardiovascular disease in Stanislaus County and nationwide give reasons to consider what we eat and what we feed our children.

As simple as it sounds, a balanced diet with five servings of fruits and vegetables and daily physical activity will go a long way to improving the health status of our community.

You can find heart healthy eating tips and nutrition information at the American Dietetic Association Web site (www.eatright.org) or at the American Heart Association site (www.americanheart.org).
