The longer it takes for H5N1 to evolve into an easily transmitted human-to-human
flu virus, which scientists and medical professions believe is forthcoming,
the more time federal, state and local agencies, and the private sector,
will have to prepare for the pandemic.
There is an extreme lack of isolation rooms throughout the nation. Many
hospitals do not have reverse airflow. A pandemic of a virulent virus
may require the hospitalization of many thousands of people, let alone
dealing with the many who may die prior to the availability of a flu vaccine.
