Kaiser Permanente is giving $1.5 million to a Modesto neighborhood coalition
in hopes of convincing people in disadvantaged areas to choose fruit juice
over soft drinks and salad instead of fast food.
Kaiser officials said they also hope residents will exercise more, thus
cutting down on high rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
The major grant is going to the West Modesto Neighborhood Collaborative,
a nonprofit organization that addresses health and safety issues in the
western part of the city.
The grant is one of the largest-ever corporate donations to promote health
in Stanislaus County.
