Pedestrian safety is the subject of the Walkable Community Workshop,
set for 8 a.m. Wednesday in the learning center at Franklin Elementary
School, 905 Byron Lane, Modesto. Leading the workshop will be Paul Zykofsky,
director of land use and transportation for the nonprofit Local Government
Commission. Similar discussions have been held in cities throughout California.
Getting hit by a car is the second-leading cause of death among children
5 to 12 years old in California. Officials and community members attending
the workshop will discuss how to create safe places to walk. Other topics
will include transit, bicycling, health and land use policies. Franklin
is hosting the workshop because of concerns that students have to cross
busy Highway 132 when walking or bicycling to school. The workshop is
sponsored by the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency along with the
county's Safe Communities Coalition. For more information, call 558-7116.
