West Nile Virus has arrived in Stanislaus County for the first time this
season, detected in a single mosquito near Grayson.
The mosquito, collected June 12, was the first of the 719 collected by
the Turlock Mosquito Abatement this year to test positive.
Mosquitoes spread the virus from birds to humans and horses.
Most humans don't show symptoms, but the virus can cause fever and flu-like
symptoms, and in rare cases, neurological problems and even death. It
is more often fatal to horses, but there are vaccines available for horses.
