Dr. John Walker, Stanislaus County's articulate public
health officer, speaking to the Hispanic Leadership Council
on July 21, said we face an overdue influenza pandemic.
An influenza pandemic is a virus that runs rampant over
a country, nation or continent. The flu pandemic of 1890
was contained in Europe. A second pandemic coincided with
the end of World War I and lasted through 1919. Called the
Spanish Flu in this country, it killed thousands from coast
to coast, 174 in Modesto.
