Modesto,
CA - A bat found dead on October 8 in Modesto on the 900 block of
11th Street has been tested positive for rabies. To date there has been
no known human contact with the bat. It is very important that anyone who
may have had contact with it call the Stanislaus County Public Health Communicable
Disease Control staff immediately at (209) 558-5678.
This notice and reminder goes out to all residents of the city and county
that in order to prevent rabies in ourselves and our community, it's very
important to:
a) have all pets (especially cats and dogs) vaccinated for rabies, do
not miss out on this; and Stanislaus County Animal Services will be providing
low cost rabies vaccination clinics on the following dates:
- October 13 3:00-4:00 p.m. Riverdale Park, Parkdale & Avondale
- October 23 9:00-11:00 a.m. Denair Senior Center, 3756 Alameda
- November 19 6:00-8:00 p.m. Keyes Hall, 5506 Jenny
b) avoid any direct contact with all wild animals such as bats, skunks,
raccoons, or foxes even if they're dead or acting abnormally, just leave
them alone, and contact Animal Services at (209) 558-7387.
Rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus found in the saliva of infected
animals that can be prevented. It can be transmitted from infected animals
to humans by saliva in a bite or deep scratch. If you are bitten or seriously
scratched by any animal, you should wash the wound thoroughly with soap
and water as soon as possible and contact your doctor immediately. Also
notify the Public Health Communicable Disease Control staff at (209) 558-5678
and Animal Services at (209) 558-7387.
