| The
topic of tobacco use and the issues of tobacco will be featured at an open
town hall meeting on Thursday, November 18, 1999 from 7:00 – 8:30
p.m. in the Riverbank Community Center at 3600 Santa Fe Avenue.
The meeting is jointly sponsored by the Tobacco Education Program of
the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency and the City of Riverbank.
The town hall meeting will be an opportunity for citizens to discuss
tobacco issues that are affecting the local community. The format will
be an open forum with active participation from those attending. An end
goal of the meeting will be the establishment of the task force that can
take ideas generated at the meeting and implement those ideas in the community.
The meeting will also take a special look at tobacco advertising and
its impact on youth. Over $19 million is spent daily on tobacco advertising.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that for every 1000 children
that continue using tobacco products after the age of twenty, 500 will
die from a tobacco-related cause.

Phillips with the Health Services Agency at (209) 558-6055.
