County – It is estimated that a minimum of $3.6 billion would
be save annually if breastfeeding were increased from current levels (64%
in-hospital and 29% at 6 months) to those recommended by the U.S. Surgeon
General (75% and 50%). And these figures are probably an underestimation
of total savings because they only represent cost savings from treating
three childhood diseases: otitis media; gastroenteritis; and necrotizing
enterocolitis.
That is why the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency (HSA) is participating
in World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 - August 7. A feature of the
week will HSA staff hosting a breastfeeding information and health resources
booth at Babies R' Us at 3500 Sisk Road in Modesto on Saturday, August
4 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Photo opportunities for this event are available
and health personnel will be available for interviews.
Other contributions to the week include displays at the Oakdale and Turlock
public libraries, a lecture for area clinicians by Dr. Thomas Hale, author
of Medication in Mother's Milk and a proclamation from Governor Davis
proclaiming August as World Breastfeeding Month.
The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency (HSA) is an outpatient medical
system with 9 medical offices located throughout Stanislaus County. The
HSA operates the Public Health Department, an Urgent Care Center and multiple
programs serving over 475,000 patients and clients each year in Stanislaus
County. The HSA also is in local partnerships for the MOMobile project
and the Stanislaus Family Practice Residency Program. The HSA has extensive
community health information available at its web site www.hsahealth.org
