"Walk to School" Events Promote Safety In Stanislaus County

Stanislaus County – Students from three Stanislaus County schools will let their feet do the walking in support of Walk to School Day. In an effort to promote pedestrian safety and the benefits of walking in the community, the Stanislaus County Safe Communities Coalition is sponsoring these walks. The coalition works to address motor vehicle injury issues for Stanislaus County.

Event locations:

  • October 5 – Fairview Elementary School
  • October 7 – Franklin Elementary School
  • October 8 – Orville Wright Elementary School
  • October 13 – Denair Elementary School
  • October 19 – Tuolumne Elementary School
  • October 20 - Shackelford Elementary School

Participants will meet at 7:15 a.m. and begin walking at 7:30 a.m. The only exception will be at Franklin Elementary School participants who will assemble at 7:30 a.m. and begin walking at 7:45 a.m.

An estimated 5,700 pedestrians are killed each year, and one out of seven (814) of those are children. With school in session, more children are walking to and from neighborhood schools, often during the busiest traffic times of the day when motorists are rushing to work or heading home after a tiring day at work.

The walking event will help to promote the use of “walking school buses,” which allow multiple students to walk as a group. The walk will help to identify safe routes to school and to identify routes that have dangers like lack of crosswalks & sidewalks, bad neighborhoods, speeding drivers and dangerous drop off zones. Another goal is to raise driver awareness and alertness through increased enforcement of traffic codes.
