County – The Stanislaus County West Nile Virus Task Force has noted
an increase in mosquito activity in some southern parts of Stanislaus County.
Jerry Davis, manager of the Turlock Mosquito Abatement District, has seen
certain pockets of communities that have caused concern.
Some of the “hot spots” of activity include the following
areas: Denair and north Denair; east of Ceres; Hackett Rd South of Whitmore;
portions of Turlock and south of Turlock; north of Hughson along the Tuolumne
River; east of Patterson (between San Joaquin River and Chestnut); Shiloh;
Crows Landing (San Joaquin River); Grayson and Ustach School area.
These areas have been treated to kill adult mosquitoes. Larviciding activities
have also increased, including the spraying of roadside ditches and gutters.
With cooler weather projected for the next several days, the local mosquito
districts anticipate seeing house mosquitoes moving closer to houses,
as mosquitoes seek shelter from the cooler weather.
The task force is reminding people to do everything they can, not to
breed mosquitoes.
Drain any standing water; change outdoor pet dish water every few days;
keep ponds circulating with fresh water; drain or replace water frequently
in bird baths; check flower pots; repair sprinkler systems that might
create standing water.
